The free trolley, bikes and walkable island pockets make it easy to trade driving time for vacation time.
The trolley connects Anna Maria, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach with stops throughout the island. Service commonly begins early morning and continues into the evening; check the live schedule before heading out because traffic and weather affect timing.
Pine Avenue, nearby beach accesses and north-end restaurants are especially enjoyable at a slower pace. Use lights after dark, lock bikes and stay alert at intersections.
A car helps with groceries and mainland trips, but island parking is limited. Golf carts are motor vehicles: use a street-legal rental, follow posted rules and park only in legal spaces.
If you are driving from the airport, stop for a larger grocery run on the mainland or in Holmes Beach before checking in. Then use smaller island markets for top-ups.
Sarasota–Bradenton is typically the closest commercial airport; Tampa and St. Pete–Clearwater offer additional flight options. Drive times vary sharply with bridge traffic, weekends and peak season, so leave a generous buffer.
